I finally finished my handsome Jake!!

Its funny because I started Neytiri first and Jake was done before her. Favoritism? Nah!

This was done as a practice run on a 5X7 piece of bass wood. Overall I am satisfied with it, but there are several sections where my shading did not come out as smooth as I wanted it and could not for the life of me seem to correct it. That is the downfall of not sanding the wood good enough or just have a bad piece. I am hoping its just that I was lazy and did not sand it good enough, because Neytiri's board is about the same. So...enjoy my Jake!!!

I cannot believe that you did this on wood! What did you actually used to make this? A burning pencil or something? The thing is that you can only do this once and every mistake is a mistake for ever. Your details are so great that I don't even mind about the small mistakes you have made. That's part of being an artist in humane life. We make mistakes and there is nothing to do about it. It is great! ;D

I used a controlled, electric burner (this is my burner: [link] )and you basically use heat to do your shading like you would a pencil only instead of using a darker hue, you turn the heat up to burn darker, turn it down to burn lighter. Burnings are very tricky...but not impossible to fix when making a mistake. Instead of a rubber eraser I have sand paper and a razor to scrape away the mistakes, or...you can hide them by changing your design which I tend to do a lot =) They also consume a lot of time, and no two are ever alike!

I used something like that a few yeard ago. One more thing that is tricky is while using it on the wood. The heat is transferred onto the wood which makes the burning strength of the burner decrease when using it. I sertainly appreciate all the work you have done and I think I'll be watching you for that for a while. Keep up the good work! ;)
